Opening note: This is a Jungian analysis is made on Light Yagami from Death Note, references taken from Psychological Types Chapter X. Light comes closest to ET(N) type. Judging over perceiving: Judging types are oriented towards forming close conclusive judgments as per their chosen criteria, while perceiving types keep open-ended observation to refine their understanding or explore more. Light was engaged in making closed systems which produce tangible output and serve his goal than simply observing or forming an understanding about the world without participating or testing conditions with certain criterion. This eliminates IS(T), IS(F), ES(T), ES(F), IN(T), IN(F), EN(T), EN(F), from our consideration. Thinking over feeling: Light's primary judging function is thinking, not feeling. His most trusted, the dominant function is a thinking type, not feeling type. The reason is evident in his disregard for emotional appeals or values projected by the world or by himself. And rather keeping utmost trust on his conscious reasoning and logical chain formation from events that arise in certain situations. Be it organizing his next move as per external threats, or digging information to proceed with his objectives while being stealthy from police or detectives. This eliminates IF(S), IF(N), EF(S), and EF(N). Dominant Te over Ti: Light orients around the objective logic, not the subjective logic. Reason is that he doesn't proceed without getting an objective confirmation which later serve in his plan as absolute reference point. For example, to know whether L is closing in to him or if somebody is actually a threat or not, he doesn't make subjective theoretical interpretations about how a logical chain of events might be followed. Instead, he confirms his suspicions and doubts by digging more information, manipulating people to reveal more, or even playing with laws in hope to know more before making his next move or changing strategy. This eliminates IT(S) and IT(N) from our consideration. Auxiliary Ni over Si: Auxiliary function supports the dominant function instead of replacing it. And Ni orients around subjective unconscious images, while Si orients around subjective sensations. Light comes closer to former than the latter because of his certain overarching visions like an ideal crime-free world, and feeling pulled towards it. And also his regular approaches being rooted in how certain situations might develop as without conscious reasoning but unconscious imagery. Be it about guessing what next step L and his department might take, what silly mistake Misa might make, or anything related. But it doesn't interfere with or replace Te, and rather support it to sharpen his judgment with perceived data. That eliminates ET(S), and proves why Light comes closest to ET(N) type. Inferior Fi: Inferior functions are subconsciously supressed functions which are brittle in nature, and stay polluted from the contents of the unconscious, appearing childish or immature when used. This fits Light Yagami perfectly with the very plot of his starting everything because he thought world should work as per his subjective sense of morality. But it was so unpolished and immature that he succumbed to the greed of becoming a God than doing what he considered "right". Fi was only a key that unlocked his Te, not the destination. It was a subconsciously suppressed function. Closing notes: Every step in chosing each primitive is explained cleanly with explanation that explains why its counterpart doesn't fit as much as the chosen function or attitude. And that's how elimination and countertype arguments were settled all at once.
