Opening note: This analysis is made on Walter White from Breaking Bad series using Classical Jung. All the points made in analysis are based on Carl Jung's Psychological Types Chapter X. I lean towards Walter White being INTJ for which I will also provide counter-arguments on the way. Ni (dominant function): Jung describes introverted intuition (Ni) as a function which composes of latent potentials and orients around subjective factor. And dominant function is the most trusted function which defines the primary worldview of a person. This very much defines Walter White's personality. "I see chemistry as a study of change" for example is his worldview, showing the latent pattern he sees in study of chemicals, where he presents his view on chemistry on the dominant pattern in it being about change of matters. And throughout the series he has many perceptions of threat from others, including Gustavo Fring, becoming restless and worried for his personal perception. These collectively show us his internally synthesized pattern recognition, where the focus isn't on object as absolute, but on the impression they leave on him. Te (auxiliary function): Jung describes extroverted thinking (Te) as a function which composes of logical relations and orients around the objective factor. And auxiliary function is the function that balances the one-sidedness of dominant function, without replacing it. This is visible in how Walter doesn't just stop with the perception of threats, opportunities, or his worldview. But he rather executes it in organizing the external world. His view on chemistry as a study of change pushes him towards him Heisenberg journey, creating a drug empire by organizing scalable networks, and being strict on production quality with known processes and standards. His perception of threat pushes him to orchestrate assassinations, making alliance with people like Jesse, using logical relation in what's already established and thus objective. Fi (tertiary function): Jung describes introverted feeling (Fi) as a function which composes of values and orients around the subjective factor. And tertiary function is immature function which may come up in bursts irregularly. Walter showed this function sometimes when it came to justifying his actions, crimes, and running an illegal empire. He associated it with "I am doing this all for my family", while later admitting why he did it all saying "because I always liked it". This always appeared for a cover up and often irregularly, than defining his primary worldview or affecting it forever. This value association is introverted because it dealt with Walter's own judgement of internal values than being something objective. Se (inferior function): Jung describes extroverted sensing (Se) as a function which composes of sensation and orients around the objective factor. And inferior function is the subconsciously repressed function which might take over the subject briefly after overuse of dominant function. Walter kept growing his meth business since the start of the series to the very end before being declared an underworld kingpin on news. Se is associated with objective sensory aspects, and Walter didn't liked being directly involved in violence, other than a few times when he was forced to. His general approach to seeing the world remains in terms of "change of matter", while execution remaining on manipulating systems or individuals, than using raw force and physical impact to make ends meet. Even where he seems to use them, its to fix a logical problem. Counter-argument against ENTJ: ENTJ or ESTJ with dominant function of Te assumes that Walter's primary worldview is through objective logical relations. Walter did pay attention to what's objective in scaling systems and networks, but they all relied on his Ni worldview. His Ni wasn't relied on Te, where his primary lens would have let him instead view world in terms of evidence and objective cause-effect than a pattern of "change" which is subjective in nature. Counter-argument against INTP: INTP with dominant Ti and auxiliary Ne doesn't seem to fit Walter for his worldview. Jung compares Ti with Kant, and Te with Darwin. Kant questioned the knowledge itself as its the logical relations orienting around subjective factor, while Darwin applied the available evidence and established logical facts to make inference about evolution. Walter similarly doesn't break the logic, but uses them to organize a larger system which produces something. Also he did show Ne in outsmarting people like Mike, but they are part of his quick-wit ability than contributing in default consciousness, which Jung warned us about being confused with. Counter-argument against ISTP: Same argument as INTP with dominant Ti, but addition to refuting Se is that he primarily relied on viewing world in terms of patterns as I repeated, and using logical structures to outmaneuver situations and solve problems, than using force or impact to get his ends meet.
