Rehman Dakait

Today I will be typing Rehman Dakait a.k.a. Rehman Baloch from Dhurandhar using Carl Jung's book Psychological Types, specifically Chapter X (Psychological Types). Typing Rehman on classic Jung fits best to the ES(T) personally type which is ESTP on MBTI. When someone hears "ESTP", the stereotype that forms in their mind is of a party animal, a bully, or a sports team leader. So it would be a tendency for many people to use those labels without analysis. But only through analysis we come to know why someone comes closest to a certain type, as I will be explaining about Rehman. Starting with the attitude, Rehman Baloch has an extroverted attitude primarily. Why? Because as per Jung, extroversion is about adapting and staying tuned to constantly changing external conditions, trends, environments, situations, etc. Rehman's constant dwelling in the external environment and data reflects this. Since the beginning of the film we, as an audience witness the petty gang wars for controlling just a dozen blocks and colonies. And there is a constant unrest among all the gang members and their leaders, including Rehman. He waits for the right external opportunity to strike on his rival gangs for example, though impulsively and carelessly. Contrary to introverted function which is about storing coherent impressions and orienting around subjective factors, Rehman's attitude is oriented around objective factors, thus expansive and tuned to trends. This clearly establishes him as an extroverted type. Now for the dominant function, it is best understood as sensing, making extroverted sensing (Se). Why? Because as per Jung, sensing is related to sense perception, or the raw data streams taken as it is through five senses. Combined with extroversion it produces the effect of being tuned to immediecy and adapting to objective factors using sense perception. Rehman's mindset of capturing a few blocks for the sense of control using raw force and violence shows this. Being thirsty for power through what's visible, and using sensory factors. Using brutal methods, torture, raw anger, and displaying power through force and manpower reflects this very well. But one caution would be to confuse all Se types as so. It is just one way Se might manifest in unhealthy individuals like Rehman Baloch. If we consider him being a Ne, Te, or Fe type, then there are refutations. As oer Jung, Ne adapts to objects using perception of unconscious images, or in layman's language, the perception of a hidden potential or idea to implement. But Rehman seems to be a person who processes and takes into consideration they are. He doesn't try to even perceive hidden meanings in daily life, and is very straight to the point. For Te, they use chains of logic and conceptual relations to adapt with objective factors. Rehman is way more impulsive and takes logic as an excuse for executing his brutal actions. Logic isn't the first thing he considers. Fe adapts to objective factors using values. They influence people as per the emotional atmosphere, in order to match it and adapt to it. Rehman seems to value it very less, being very direct, rude, and often straight to the face even when opportunity is at the doors. For example, when the organization planning the Mumbai terror attack comes with a proposal of arms deal, he says it to face without caring how well the deal might go, "Don't try to backstab me, else I will torture you and your men the way your upcoming generations will remember forever." This was Se volition again using raw force to seal the deal, not emotions. So until now, I have proved why extroversion is the primary attitude, not introversion. And why extroverted sensing (Se) is more coherent to Rehman's profile than Ne, Te, and Fe. Now comes the auxiliary function, which is best as thinking, not feeling. One might ask why. This is because of the very behavior of Rehman which shows the Se-Ti pair, not the Se-Fi. Consider this: auxiliary function as per Jung is less differentiated than the dominant, but it doesn't oppose it, and instead helps it balance and reach roots which it alone might not. How does it manifest in Rehman? Since starting we see how impulsive he is with immediacy without considering its deeper developments and consequences. But still there is sometimes doubt within him regarding his impulses. He uses logic to make minor organizations and excuse it. For example, when he asks every gang member about revenge regarding his killed son, "What would you do if you were on my side?" Everyone answers negatively. He still keeps asking until Hamza provides a logical relation, "At your position, I would have struck them the next day. They killed your son because elections are coming, and you won't be silly to lose the election by making a wrong move. They aren't ready, and it's the time we must strike." Rehman immediately agrees to it for being sound practically. This shows us the Se-Ti pair where a logically consistent narrative aids his sensory impulses to manifest and be balanced. Contrary to feeling auxiliary, it doesn't convince him. Consider another similar scene after the AK-47 deal with terrorists. Hamza tries to stop the deal by attempting manipulation, "Brother Rehman, would you really do this? For the sake of our Baloch land, what if they attack our people and rebel forces? Would you really try to backstab us?" Rehman being furious replies, "Has been decades since I've been doing this dirty work. I have seen who does what, who cares about whom, and what my people are worth. So you will teach me what I should do or not do? Huh? Who do you think you are?" Even an internally consistent emotional framework fails to manipulate him, which proves he isn't Se-Fi (ESFP), who would consider Fi values and interpersonal relational distances. For the inferior Ni, there are certain points to consider. Its very obvious that a sensing function itself is self-evident for an inferior intuition. Still if we consider some evidence, then that would be embedded in his negligence or low value attribution to latent development and hidden essences. Jung said that intuition function, especially Ni is involved with symbolic perception of unconscious images. Someone engaging in immediate sense of perception and adaptation naturally negates their orientation to subjective images that rise from a priori. We never see Rehman talking about or even considering talking about the deeper essence of the universe, world, or meaning behind existence (as intuition is integrative functions that merge all hidden meaning into a single essence). Instead he is concerned with his immediate needs and orients around sense perception.
