George Orwell was an English novelist, essayist, and social critic best known for his sharp examinations of political power, propaganda, inequality, and authoritarianism. Born Eric Arthur Blair in 1903, he wrote with a strong concern for truth, individual freedom, and the dangers of political oppression. His experiences as a colonial policeman, journalist, and participant in the Spanish Civil War deeply influenced his worldview. Orwell's most famous works, Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four, remain influential for their warnings about dictatorship, manipulation, surveillance, and the corruption of language. His writing combines political insight with clear, direct prose, making him one of the twentieth century's most enduring writers.
