[Scene-1]
“(...)I think about you all the time Nikki and I'm try not to.You're in every song I listen to.You were the only person who was nice to me when I moved here. And first I thought maybe...Well, I realized who you are.And then after Nana passed, you were the one that called.Even when I didn't have anything to say and we just sat there. So I keep telling myself, don't tell her, she's too good. And she'll...You'll lose her. But maybe you should know that I would choose you over everything.”
This-dialogue-actually-draws-strong-outlines-in-our-minds-regarding-why-Bear's-feelings-for-Nikki-arose-in-the-first-place.Bear-had-just-moved-to-the-neighborhood;and-during-that-period,Nikki-supported-him-like-no-one-else-did.In-fact,when-his-grandmother-passed-away,-she-was"the one that called."In-other-words,for-Bear,Nikki-was-someone-special-not-because-of-her-beauty—which-might-be-considered-love-at-first-sight—but-because-of-her-kind-hearted-approach-toward-him.
“No,stop!Okay,that was cringy.”–Ian
Instead,Ian-suggested-that-he-tease-Nicky.He-wanted-him-to-call-her"Freaky Nicky"even-though-he-knew-she-hated-it.“You know she's sensitive about that.”
Instead-of-teasing-her,Baron-wanted-to-invite-her-to-a-trivia-night-and-open-up-to-her-there,but-Ian-didn't-let-him.As-for-why-Baron-wants-to-do-it-in-trivia-nights—well,he-just-loves-trivia,he-said.However-these-passage-from-the-original-script-is-important:
/You're the only person I've ever met with the same sense of humor as me.We have the same taste in music,we both love—/
[Scene-2]
The-one-where-Baron-goes-to-the-bar-and-tries-to-confess-to-Nicky-after-losing-his-cat.
Nicky-calls-Baron-after-work,asks-how-his-day-went,and-inquires-about-when-he-is-coming-over.When-Baron-says-he-can't-make-it,she-tries-to-convince-him-by-saying-she-needs-him,but-Baron-still-says-he-can't-come.But-later-we-realize-she-wanted-to-meet-up-because-she-is-quitting-her-job-and-leaving.It's-like-a-farewell-of-sorts.
Baron-goes-to-a-gift-shop-to-get-her-a-present-so-that-Nicky-will-remember-him.
While-hanging-out-at-the-cafe,Nikki-notices-Baron-signaling-Ian-to-leave-them-alone,so-she-intentionally-goes-to-buy-drinks,thus-intentionally-creates-a-moment-alone-with-Baron.It-seems-like-Nikki-is-aware-of-everything.When-they-go-to-get-the-drinks,Nikki-mocks-Baron's-choice-of-drink-and-teases-him,-making-jokes.Baron-doesn't-mind-or-get-offended-by-any-of-it.He-laughs.Nikki-asks-how-his-day-went,-and-Baron-shares-it-with-her.-But-because-Ian-interrupts-and-doesn't-allow-it,he-can't-bring-up-the-topic-he-wanted-to-open.
Later-in-the-scene,when-they-step-out-to-the-door,Baron-laughs-out-loud-at-a-joke-Nikki-makes.There,Nikki-smiles-and-gives-Baron-a-meaningful-look.No,-it’s-not-like-she-is-disgusted-by-him-or-hates-him;-it's-like-she-is-fully-aware-of-everything.
Here,we-can-clearly-say-that-Baron-is-already-quite-a-stressed-person,and-the-jokes-Nikki-makes-take-away-this-anxious-state-of-his.Baron-loves-Nikki-not-only-because-she-treated-him-well,but-also-because-she-takes-him-away-from-the-anxious-reality-with-her-jokes.
When-Baron-sees-Nikki-giving-money-to-a-homeless-man,we-witness-Baron's-love-struck-gaze-at-her-and-the-semi-romantic-music-playing-in-the-background.Here,the-subtext-is-telling-us-that-Baron-admires-Nikki-not-just-for-how-she-cares-for-him,or-how-cheerful-and-peaceful-she-makes-him-feel,but-also-for-how-helpful-she-is-toward-others.
While-driving-her-home-to-confess-to-her—Baron-offers-to-drive-her-himself—Nikki-tells-him-that-he-can-call-her-whenever-he-wants-regarding-his-cat.Baron’s-response-is:“I know.”
Contrary-to-what-is-claimed,none-of-Nikki's-facial-expressions-convey-hatred;she-seems-more-overwhelmed-than-anything.She-tells-Baron-that-she-shares-certain-topics-with-him-but-that-he-is-a-"brick wall,"clearly-trying-to-coax-him-into-explaining-his-feelings-for-her.However,-when-previously-Ian-jokes-about"your girl"and-Baron-mentions-he-bought-her-a-gift,-she-naturally-gets-grossed-out-and-says“eww.”
She-drops-a-hint-that-Sarah-likes-him-by-bringing-up-the-topic:“Sarah asked me about you all the day. How do you feel about that.”
And-one-last-dialogue,from-Baron:“Hey, do you remember in Mr. Lando's class when, uh, I forgot my mouthpiece? And he was, like, in a really pissy mood that day, and you told me he had an extra one. And you gave me yours,but,like...”Yet-again,-another-story-about-Nikki-helping-him...
The-reason-Baron-doesn't-confess-to-Nikki-after-this-scene-isn't-Ian;it's-because-when-they-arrive-at-the-house,Nikki-brushes-it-off-very-quickly-and-gets-out-of-the-car—everything-happens-fast.But-later,when-Baron-listens-to-Ian's-advice-and-teases-her-by-calling-her"Freaky Nikki,"Nikki-gets-upset.-And-because-Nikki-is-angry,-when-she-aggressively-asks-"do you like me?",he-responds,"I think we're good friends."
[Scene-3]
Here,we-will-analyze-the-speech-Nikki-makes-during-the-scene-where-she-goes-to-Ian's-party-with-Bear.This-scene-is-highly-complex.However,the-common-view-is-that-in-this-passage,Nikki-was-explicitly-stating-that-she-had-previously-viewed-Bear-as-a-brother.Apart-from-this-scene,in-the-phone-scene-before,Ian-already-tells-Baron-on-the-phone-that-Nikki-told-Sarah-that-she-previously-saw-Baron-as-her-little-brother.That-explains-the-"eww",such-insinuations-regarding-the-person-you-view-as-a-sibling-make-your-stomach-turn.
[Scene-4]
In-this-scene,Baron-and-Fake-Nicky-have-gone-out-for-dinner-together.
"No,I specifically remember we were doing busy work for Ms.Crawford.She wanted us to write down what career we wanted after school, and you said “writer,”and I said“In a Band,”and the teacher made me change it.You leaned over to me and you said–I’ll be in your band. Those were the first words you ever said to me."–Baron to F.Nikki
Here,-he-mentions-wanting-to-be-in-a-band-when-he-grew-up,-but-when-the-teacher-tried-to-make-him-change-his-mind,-Nikki-supported-him,which-is-how-they-met.However,-he-is-embarrassed-by-this-now:
"We never did start that band."–F.Nicky
"Thank God."
Just-before-the-conversation-below,Baron-mentions-that-his-father-works-at-Toyota-and-that-he-wants-to-work-there-when-he-grew-up.Then,-F.Nicky-interrupts-and-asks-the-following-question.
/“I want to know what Baron Bailey would be the happiest doing for the rest of his life?”
“I really don’t want or need much. I think I want a house...maybe in Fairhope? A few kids...”
"How many?”Nicky smiles.She’s a good listener.
“Not too many.Three.So they grow up together.I’d be a food critic or something.”
Nicky laughs.“A food critic? You put ketchup on your steak!”
“I’d go in and they’re like“Hey! you’re that food guy!And I’m like“Please call me Three Bite Bailey.”They bring me a four-course meal.I pull out my wallet and they say,“Oh no,tonight is on the house.”And then get paid.”/
Here,we-see-that-Bear-bases-his-desire-to-be-a-chef-on-the"food guy"identity-and-the-ease-of-making-money,-saving-food.-It-doesn't-stem-from-a-passion-from-a-self-confidence.At-the-same-time,-he-makes-a-sarcastic-remark-in-this-minimalist-dream-about-being-able-to-earn-easy-money-and-free-food.And,-Nicky-is-not-asking-him-what-he-wants-to-be-when-he-grew-up;-she-is-asking-him-what-would-make-him-the-happiest-for-the-rest-of-his-life,-and-Bear-describes-this-strictly-through-material-aspects—a-comfortable-life-with-a-house-and-kids.He-is-interested-in-more-materialistic-things.In-fact-he-didn't-mention-Nicky.What-Baron-really-enjoys-here-isn't-fame,or-merged-life;it's-free-food-and-a-safe-and-comfortable-life.
Now-the-moment-where-Baron-returns-to-the-table-after-talking-with-his-friend-Ian.Baron-asks-F.Nicky-if-her-dad-really-has-cancer:
/(...)Nicky:"Then why does it matter...?"
Silence settles.Bear, lost in thought, realizes his yearning for her overshadows everything else. Her actions, her lies—it all fades away, and only her presence matters.
Bear(matter of fact):"Doesn't matter to me."
His response reveals a disregard for truth, showing a readiness to ignore darker realities for affection, hinting at a deeply flawed person./
Here,-"ignore the reality"-and-"flawed"-come-directly-from-the-writer's-own-pen.-"only her presence matters."Baron-is-no-fool.He-already-realizes-she-is-under-control-as-early-as-the-dinner-scene.
We-observe-that-the-Baron—who-had-previously-hesitated-to-make-a-move-toward-Nicky—only-steps-forward-after-realizing-she-is-under-the-influence-of-the-wish.Likely-the-fear-of-making-a-mistake-or-driving-her-away-has-vanished.
[CONCLUSİON]
Baron's biggest reason for falling in love with Nikki is that she supports him and makes him feel safe in his stressed, intense, and heavily burdened world.Despite exhibiting E4 and E9 traits, the sole factor driving him to take action is a concern for safety.Baron didn't love Nicky herself, but rather Nicky's kindness and protective, sisterly care.Future dreams align with comfort, clearity and safety. Thus, his motivation fits SP6 the most.Presenting Baron's approach to managing his relationship with Nicky as evidence of emotional thinking through cognitive functions, and claiming it's SO4 evidence,is not a matter of fact, but rather an opinion and assertion. In my view,Baron didn't love Nicky herself, but rather Nicky's kindness and protective, sisterly care. And Baron couldn't manage the situation because he didn't want to fix her, instead wanted to make her more useful. At some point,he realizes that Nicky doesn't even remember her memories, and Nicky sends her a note saying "That's not me,"or screams "That's not me,"or acts like it's not her, even though he knows it's not her,and then calls and says, like,Could we change this up a bit?The first question he asks is if that's even possible. And the movie constantly shows how anxious and sensitive Bear is toward the outside world. He already struggles to act impulsively or without thinking things through, which is compatible to SP6.
Presenting Baron's approach to managing his relationship with Nicky as evidence of emotional thinking through cognitive functions, and claiming it's SO4 evidence,is not a matter of fact, but rather an opinion and assertion.Social 4 would build their life's purpose on a marginal sense of belonging, not comfort, and would embody their pain to gain validation. However,Baron never states or implies that he has suffered or wants his suffering to be seen. When the future is described by SO4s,the emphasis on identity, uniqueness, and lofty ideals is pronounced. They want to be recognized for their distinct self.Conversely,Baron's dream is strikingly minimalist and materialistic. He desires a safe, comfortable life with a house and kids—an unmistakable manifestation of the Self-Preservation instinct seeking a secure environment against an anxious reality.
As for the SX9 argument, the core motivation of SX9 is psychological merging with a significant other to forget the self.Yet,when asked what would make him the happiest for the rest of his life,Baron completely omits Nikki or any notion of a shared destiny. He focuses on the "food guy" identity solely for the ease of making money and securing free food.He is not craving social recognition or romantic fusion;he is craving a shield against life's unpredictability.
What some critics misinterpret as a romantic or identity-driven "obsession" is actually the hyper-vigilant,threat-managing attachment style unique to a heavily burdened SP6.Claudio Naranjo defines the Self-Preservation Six as an individual who copes with fear by seeking strong, protective figures or groups to shelter them from a world they perceive as dangerous, noting that their obsession with finding a safe haven makes them deeply dependent on their designated protectors.
Baron’s intense focus on Nikki perfectly mirrors this defensive mechanism, but with a crucial nuance:he does not actively go out of his way to beg for an alliance or ask her for help.Instead, his SP6 fixation manifests as an unspoken, utilitarian dependence on Nikki as his structural support system—his "reliable safe haven."This is precisely why Baron cannot manage the situation when things go wrong;his priority is never to genuinely fix or heal Nikki as an independent individual, but rather to preserve her utility as his predictable, stable anchor against his chronic anxiety.
Naranjo also highlights that SP6 individuals “love clarity, rules, and predictable environments because ambiguity triggers their core anxiety.”This psychological law perfectly resolves the apparent contradiction in his cold, tactical reaction to the horrific discovery that Nicky is under the influence of the wish—a moment that initial analyses might honestly mistake for a lack of SP6 caution or a Four's dramatic disillusionment.Even after she screams or sends a note saying “That's not me,”his response is entirely devoid of a Four's existential heartbreak or a Nine's avoidant numbing.Instead,it triggers an SP6's tactical crisis-management mode:he calls to ask if they can change the situation, inquiring strictly about the technical possibilities to restore predictability to his safe haven.
While this clinical approach might superficially seem to clash with the traditional view of a loyal, fear-driven Six,it demonstrates the ultimate intellectual honesty of the SP6 profile: Baron’s core priority is not the emotional or independent well-being of Nikki, but the survival of his own psychological buffer. To be clear, typing Baron as an SP6 does not mean denying his obvious E4 and E9 traits;indeed, his profile is best understood as a 649 Tritype. The minor inconsistencies in his behavior—such as his adolescent dream of being in a band, his embarrassment over it,and the ease with which his teacher changed his mind—are clear manifestations of his 4-fix(shame/identity)and 9-fix(avoiding conflict/over-yielding).What mattered in this memory wasn't that,it was Nikki's support. However, drawing a core motivation from this band dream or his passivity is a structural error. The Enneagram is defined by the primary driving force, and for Baron, those 4 and 9 traits are strictly subordinate to his 6 core. The moment Nikki's unpredictability vanishes under the wish, his paralyzing fear of driving her away disappears, and he finally steps forward.Furthermore, Baron only exhibits the classic SP6 behavior of actively seeking an alliance and demanding help from a friend when the threat becomes completely unmanageable—specifically, when the tragic incident happens to Sarah. Also, his sudden departure to the car wasn't caused by carelessness or a failure of the Six's hyper-vigilance,but by the urgent, defensive need to prevent Sarah from waking Nicky up,which would trigger a chaotic threat to the very environment his passion of fear was desperately trying to keep secure.
Enneagram is about core motivations, not surface-level actions.Baron's own words from the original script repeatedly highlight his need for protection. When he recalls the band story,he is embarrassed by the dream itself, proving he doesn't value the creative identity of a Four;what he safeguards is the memory of Nikki's unconditional support. He treasures her not because she truly"saw"him as a unique soul, but because she acted as a protective,kind-hearted buffer against his chronic anxiety.Every action he takes is strictly aligned with the SP6's fundamental search for a reliable ally in a dangerous world. And I dont make assumption about the dialogues, when there are the dialogues and the emphasis with convincing subtxt clear.I'm bringing them from original script. If Bear speaks only of Nikki's help, we cannot—as some do—claim that Nikki truly"saw"him and made him feel special, because there is no evidence of that.Nor can we ignore the subtext of his role as"Food Guy"and simply assume he wants that role because he craves recognition.
