Opening note: I am going to analyze Anton Chigurh on the basis of Moral Aligment from D&D. And I lean towards him being closest to Lawful Evil. Evil (good-evil axis): Anton comes closest as an evil character than good or neutral. Reason being his impulse of killing others, often treating them as cattles, which is symbolically shown with his signature weapon being captive bolt pistol, used for slaughtering animals. His evilness doesn't merely come because he kills people, but because he does so even for his sadistic purpose of seeing them lose gamble with a coin toss, which they never chose to participate in. And if they refuse to gamble, then kill them as he did to Carla Jean Moss. For certain people like the detonator dealers and the gas station onwer, there was no reason to kill them, but he still pushes them to gamble believing its in fate of theirs. Lawful (law-chaos axis): Anton's evilness was not just evil, but also a result of doctrine he strictly followed. That is, if people win the gamble loke coin toss, he wouldn't kill them, even if he wills to. And if they refuse to, he would kill them. He followed certain codes of conduct, and very strictly adhered to them. Also he lets the woman accountant live who refused to provide Moss' address, because the rules he followed said he can't kill someone who is just doing his/her job if there is an alternate solution to problem he faces. So being lawful isn't just "following laws written in one's constitution", but about following any laws, made by the individual or someone else for anything. In this case, it was about personally created rules to follow and guide himself. Counter-argument against Neutral Evil (NE): Anton was certainly not NE, because NE don't follow rules strictly, while also not being reckless in their pursuit. We instead see that Anton is a very calm contract killer who strictly adheres to rules irrespective of how he feels at a given moment. NE are often known as those who could anytime betray anyome for their personal interests without being reliable, while LE clearly follow a certain code of conduct to fulfill their interests. Counter-argument against True Neutral (TN): Anton doesn't seem to come anywhere near descriptiom of TN. Reason is that his intentions were clearly evil, he used his own laws to justify his killings and sadistic fun of observing his targets stumble emotionally when he is about to kill them. TN are more pragmatic, and understand the neutral nature of universe. And their intentions are certainly not for evil purposes.
