Today I will be typing Bruce Wayne a.k.a. Batman from The Dark Knight (Trilogy) on classic Jung. Bruce comes closest to the IF(S) type of classic Jung, i.e. ISFP in MBTI. When people hear about ISFP, the stereotype that comes to their mind is about an emotional artist who is unstable and is very private in terms of values, seeking autonomy. But if we strip the surface level traits to know the underlying system, we get a different picture, as in the case of Bruce Wayne. Talking of the attitude of Bruce Wayne, he comes better as an introverted type. This is evident in his natural tendency and preference to process events in an integrative way. Instead of adapting to external trends that could dynamically change with time, he sticks to personal convention and filters every data through that impression. For instance, since his parents were murdered, his journey and exile, followed by facing supervillains like Joker, Ra's Al Ghul, Bane, etc, he constantly seeks to understand the experiences and categorize them as impressions and deeper understanding of the world. While an extroverted type would tend to adapt with constantly changing trends, and not seeking internal coherence. Batman does show adaptability to many situations, but that is his ability learnt through discipline, not orientation. This establishes the fact that Bruce orients around the subjective factor, not the objective one. From the four introverted functions, Bruce can be best classified as an introverted feeler (Fi). This is seen throughout the trilogy regarding how he understands events and forms a coherent moral framework based on that, feeling being a judging function. For example, Jung describes feeling as a function that deals with abstract valuation of contents - Good/bad, honor/dishonor, pleasant/unpleasant, etc. Being an introverted function, he uses it to filter experiences or data through it. Since his parents are murdered, he had a negative view on thugs, and later holds a grudge on their killers only to later fail in assassinating him. Then to grasp deeper understanding of those values, he even sets on a journey, wandering across the globe, trying to live within the poor, thieves, and criminals. Doing this he refines his moral framework to be more robust, which we see throughout the trilogy. The moral codes he forms and corresponding decisions he takes similarly are not based on what's most logical or most efficient, but on what he feels is righteous. Sticking to them, he refuses to compromise them no matter what the consequences might be. If we compare other introverted types, we will notice why Fi dominates as the dominant cognitive function. Ti deals with forming coherent systems through logical relations as per Jung. But Bruce Wayne forms moral framework through his experiences, more than logical ones. For instance, he dismisses what doesn't fit his moral code, like "no kill" rule, even if it means sparing most dangerous criminals like Joker who could later harm others. However, a Ti-dominant person is usually expected to follow a logically coherent system to make decisions, where sparing such criminals or following certain rigid moral codes could be seen as inefficient or unproductive. He even burnt down whole Ninja school of Ra's Al Ghul to not kill the convicted murderer. That's how far he was willing to go even if he knew the school was serving a greater cause that was keeping balance in the world, even if their practices are questionable. We don't see any attempt to even understand them, we just see rejection based on what's judged "wrong" as per personal moral framework. Similarly, Si deals with impressions of sensory perception as per Jung. They are expected to see their experience in terms of how those sensations are internally felt, and how they compare to existing sensation. However, Bruce doesn't show any such processing. Sensation is a perceiving function, while Bruce comes closer as a judging type. A sensing Batman would be expected to connect present experience to how they relate to past sensations. And Ni types form coherent impressions of unconscious images, deeper meaning, potential, or essence which aren't directly caught by senses. As per Jung, they take hidden meaning or potential in multiple concept, and form a single large meaning from it, which sometimes manifests as a feeling of inevitability, fate, or a complete system. Whereas Bruce wasn't looking of hidden or underlying meaning behind the events, be it corruption in Gotham, murder of his parents, his learnings from exile, etc. He was instead constantly judging these events through his moral lens, and refining them as per following experiences. An introverted intuitive Batman could be expected to show a sense of understanding more physically abstract nature of the world and take his mission as a spiritual destiny, not moral duty. Now as I have proven for why introversion with feeling dominant fits him best, I will explain why sensing, or extroverted sensing in particular as an auxiliary function fits his profile the best. While dominant function is the most trusted function which becomes the lens of the person to view the world and filter information from it, auxiliary as per Jung is less differentiated function which doesn't oppose dominant function, rather aid it when it hits a wall. And extroverted sensation deals with adaptation to external trends or situations using sensation. This can manifest in many ways, but for Bruce it manifests in form of using force and real-time combat skills. Fi alone as an understanding isn't enough, he strives to enforce it and implement it. And more importantly to expand his moral understanding himself. For example, during his years on wandering around the globe, he decides to physically live among the poor, thieves, and criminals alike. Before which, he was frustrated with questions about morality and righteousness. After hitting this wall, he proceeds to receive real-time information from his sensory conditions and lived experiences, and form a better understanding of his moral values. And after being trained and beginning his crusade as Batman, he constantly engages in putting himself in lethal situations where use of force and immediate awareness is required. But he doesn't do it for its own sake, and to rather enforce his moral values. In contrary to extroverted sensing (Se), an auxiliary extroverted intuition (Ne) would have been expected to understand and refine their moral values through perception of unconscious images or deeper meaning behind events. For example, a Batman with Fi-dominant and Ne-auxiliary would have been more oriented towards adaptation through perception of hidden latent patterns or meaning in their experiences when they hit a wall and where their value system doesn't know what to do. Bruce instead very clearly shows a stronger preference to adapt and engage with new situations sensorily in order to feed its Fi with more data to its moral framework. We never see Batman philosophizing or finding alternative explanations behind why certain situations can't be answered through his moral values. And Te cognitive function deals with adaptation to rapidly changing external conditions with use of logic. This is the inferior function in Bruce Wayne. Reason is evident in his orientation. Despite being a billionaire, his execution remains physical use of force and pressure to adapt with new challenges (Se), not using his large network and financial power to bring bad players down. He does use them, but very selectively, preferring to carry operations out by himself physically. As per Jung, the inferior function is the lowest valued function which is polluted by the contents of consciousness and erupts suddenly when a prolonged use of dominant function is seen. For instance, Bruce has been seen questioning himself regarding and his chosen path and ideals, with periods of self-loathing, like after Joker has killed Rachel. This is very rare and only comes up as a compensation for his overused Fi, without replacing it. Overall, Bruce from The Dark Knight trilogy seems to fit the profile of IF(S) / ISFP the best, and breaks many stereotypes associated with ISFP personality type.
