Nate River, better known as Near, from Death Note is most commonly interpreted as INTJ in modern MBTI discussions, although INTP is also a strong alternative because of his analytical, detached, and investigative nature. When examined through the framework of Carl Jung’s Chapter X of Psychological Types, INTJ provides the strongest four-letter MBTI equivalent. Jung himself did not use the MBTI system, and Near is a fictional character, so this classification should be understood as an interpretive comparison between Jungian psychological functions and Near’s observable personality, reasoning style, and behavior throughout Death Note. The dominant function associated with the modern INTJ type is Introverted Intuition (Ni). Jung described the introverted intuitive type as an individual whose perception is directed toward inner images, unconscious connections, possibilities, and underlying patterns rather than toward immediate sensory reality. Jung emphasized that introverted intuition can produce conclusions that appear sudden or difficult for others to understand because the psychological process leading to them occurs internally. Near frequently behaves in this way. He may remain silent for extended periods before presenting a conclusion that connects several apparently unrelated facts. His deductions are often the result of an internal synthesis of information rather than a visible step-by-step process. He does not need constant external confirmation to continue developing his hypothesis. The auxiliary function associated with INTJ is Extraverted Thinking (Te). Jung described extraverted thinking as an orientation toward organizing objective reality according to logical principles, efficiency, and practical effectiveness. Near demonstrates this function through his systematic approach to investigation. Once he develops a hypothesis, he seeks external evidence capable of confirming or disproving it. He organizes information, coordinates his investigative resources, evaluates the reliability of individuals, and constructs practical strategies for exposing Kira. Unlike a purely theoretical thinker, Near wants his conclusions to produce concrete results. His ultimate objective is not simply understanding Kira intellectually but identifying and apprehending the person responsible. He therefore converts his intuitive insights into operational plans. The confrontation with Light demonstrates this combination particularly well. Near carefully establishes conditions under which the identity of Kira can be exposed, coordinating multiple people and resources to create a situation in which his hypothesis can be objectively tested. The tertiary function of INTJ is Introverted Feeling (Fi). Jung described introverted feeling as a subjective system of personal values that may remain concealed beneath a reserved exterior. Near is not openly sentimental, but he possesses a strong internal sense of what he considers right and wrong. His opposition to Kira is not simply an intellectual competition. He fundamentally rejects Kira's attempt to establish himself as an absolute judge over humanity. Near's resistance therefore contains a moral dimension, even though he rarely expresses it emotionally. Near also demonstrates a strong individualistic orientation.
