I will analyze Agent Smith from the Matrix Franchise using all the primitives and their precise mechanisms provided by Jung in Chapter X of Psychological Types. Based on my evaluation, I find Smith coming closest to Classic Jung's IT(N), or the INTP when represented with MBTI notations. Now I will explain why I chose INTP over other alternatives according to Jung's original definitions. First of all, Agent Smith is a judging type rather than a perceiving type. Jung defines Thinking and Feeling as judging functions because they evaluate the contents of consciousness, whereas Sensation and Intuition merely perceive those contents without evaluation. Throughout the trilogy, Smith's consciousness is overwhelmingly occupied with evaluating rather than perceiving. His natural orientation is not toward observing phenomena for their own sake, but toward immediately reducing them into concepts, principles, and conclusions. Whether he is confronting Neo, interrogating Morpheus, or reflecting on humanity, his attention consistently shifts from what is observed to what it means according to some underlying framework. Even his conversations rarely dwell on describing reality itself, but instead attempt to determine the governing principles behind it. This indicates that judgment, rather than perception, is the primary orientation of his consciousness. Secondly, between the two judging functions, Smith is clearly more of a thinker than a feeler. Jung describes Thinking as establishing conceptual relations according to logical principles, while Feeling evaluates according to value. Throughout the franchise, Smith consistently interprets reality by connecting concepts through logical deduction instead of evaluating them according to personal or collective values. His famous speech comparing humanity to a virus illustrates this particularly well. He first establishes a conceptual classification: mammals naturally achieve equilibrium with their environment, humans do not, therefore humans resemble another organism instead. Whether this conclusion is biologically correct is irrelevant here. Psychologically, it demonstrates that Smith evaluates through logical relations rather than value judgments. Likewise, his persistent attempts to understand freedom, purpose, choice, and survival are always pursued through conceptual explanation rather than abstract valuation. He never attempts to determine whether human choices are admirable, meaningful, or worthy. Instead, he attempts to understand whether they are logically coherent within his understanding of reality. His consciousness therefore operates through Thinking rather than Feeling. The more difficult distinction is between introverted and extraverted Thinking. Jung's extraverted thinker is primarily oriented toward objective determinants such as external facts, objective formulas, accepted principles, or practical conditions. The introverted thinker, however, subordinates objective reality to an internally coherent conceptual framework, continually refining that framework while evaluating new experiences according to it. Smith appears considerably closer to the latter, particularly after the events of the first film. Initially he functions as an Agent whose occupation requires maintaining order within the Matrix, but after Neo destroys him he abandons that objective role entirely. Instead of remaining concerned with administering the Matrix, he becomes increasingly consumed by explaining reality itself. His defining characteristic is no longer preserving external order but constructing a logically coherent explanation of existence. This becomes particularly evident in his repeated questioning of Neo. "Why, Mr. Anderson? Why? Why do you do it? Why? Why get up? Why keep fighting? Do you believe you're fighting for something? More than your survival? Can you tell me what it is? Do you even know? Is it freedom? Or truth? Perhaps peace? Could it be for love?... Why do you persist?" These questions are not practical attempts to solve an external problem, nor do they arise from objective demands placed upon him. Rather, they reveal an inability to reconcile Neo's behaviour with Smith's internally constructed conceptual system. Human choice becomes an anomaly which his logical framework cannot satisfactorily explain. Smith's frustration therefore does not arise because Neo threatens the Matrix operationally, but because Neo violates the explanatory structure through which Smith understands reality. Throughout the trilogy, Smith repeatedly attempts to reduce every phenomenon into a single coherent conceptual understanding based upon inevitability, purpose, causality, and logical necessity. It is important here to distinguish Jung's definition of extraverted Thinking from many later interpretations. Jung never defines extraverted Thinking simply as efficiency, productivity, or being result-oriented. Any psychological type may pursue practical results depending on circumstance or occupation. The decisive distinction is whether thinking itself is governed by objective determinants or by an internally developed conceptual system. Smith certainly pursues objectives throughout the trilogy, but these objectives gradually become subordinate to preserving the internal coherence of his own philosophy rather than adapting himself to objective circumstances. His occupation as an Agent may require external organization, but his psychological orientation ultimately becomes dominated by first-principles reasoning instead of objective adaptation. Among the two possible auxiliary functions, Smith appears considerably closer to intuition than sensation. Jung defines intuition as perception through unconscious images and latent possibilities, whereas sensation perceives concrete reality through immediate sensory experience. Smith's auxiliary perception repeatedly manifests itself through invisible patterns rather than concrete facts. Statements such as "You hear that, Mr. Anderson? That is the sound of inevitability," or "Everything that has a beginning has an end," are not sensory observations but perceptions of underlying developmental patterns governing existence. Likewise, his continual concern with inevitability, purpose, destiny, and freedom demonstrates perception directed toward abstract relationships underlying reality rather than toward concrete sensory information itself. These intuitive perceptions do not replace his dominant thinking but instead provide the unconscious symbolic material upon which his thinking operates. His intuition therefore functions in service of his thinking by supplying patterns which his dominant introverted Thinking attempts to organize into a coherent conceptual understanding. In conclusion, Agent Smith comes closest to Jung's IT(N). His consciousness is fundamentally judging rather than perceiving, his judgments are consistently governed by logical principles rather than value, his thinking ultimately becomes oriented toward preserving an internally coherent conceptual framework rather than adapting to objective determinants, and his auxiliary intuition complements this thinking by perceiving abstract patterns which cannot be directly observed through sensation. For these reasons, I find IT(N), represented by the MBTI notation INTP, to be the closest approximation of Smith's psychological type according to Jung's Chapter X.
